I thought I would focus this blog on Google Classroom training for all teachers who would need to use Google Classroom (all teachers teaching a content area not supported by Virtual Virginia). I will write some blogs on Canvas later (after your initial training with Mrs. Smith).
What is Google Classroom?
I'm glad you asked. Classroom is not a true LMS (learning management system). LMS are programs (like Canvas) that can be used in a blended learning setting or in a strictly virtual learning setting. Classroom is designed to be used in more of a blended setting where teachers still have face to face interaction with their students.
What are the expectations for Google Classroom?
Here is the presentation from Mr. Maddox that describes how to use Google Classroom this year. This is the presentation that will be used when you have your Google training with your school's Google Gurus.
Now let's look at each item in this presentation and go over how to do it step-by-step.
First, let's create a class in Google Classroom:
Grading Categories (Topics) and adding assignments:
Super Important!!!! Add Mr. Maddox to the Classroom. You can add him as a student, but he must be added so he can see what is going on in your class.
Google Meet to use as a screen-sharing platform for video lessons:
Using Google Meet to take attendance:
That was a lot of info.
This will at least get you started and you can check in with me (or your building Google Guru) if I am not around.
Just throwing this out there:
If I am not scheduled to be in your building when you have a question and your Google Guru is busy, email me and ask if I can join up with you on a Google Meet. That way we can talk real-time and screen share if we need to so I can better help you.
Final thought:
We are all going through a lot of new stuff this year. It is ok to feel overwhelmed. We are all in this together to support each other. I am here to help in any way that I can and can't wait to help you through all of this technology stuff (seriously, it is my jam!)
